Barber Street Road Extension and Bridge Construction to Begin

WILSONVILLE, OR -- Construction will begin the week of October 6 on the $6.3 million Barber Street road-extension and bridge project, providing a new east-west connection linking Wilsonville's western residential neighborhoods with the City's industrial employment areas. The new Barber Street bridge crosses Coffee Lake Creek/Seeley Ditch from Kinsman Road on the east to Coffee Lake Drive on the west.

The Barber Street extension is designed to improve connections between the Villebois, Park at Merryfield, Parkwood Estates and Montebello neighborhoods to the SMART Transit Center and WES Commuter Rail Station, Coca Cola plant, and other frequently visited locations on the west side of I-5. The project is also expected to alleviate traffic congestion on Brown Road and Wilsonville Road when the new east-west route opens late in 2015.

Mayor Tim Knapp said that, "The Barber street road extension is a key to providing better connectivity between growing west side neighborhoods and our SMART and WES Transit Center, commercial districts, and various employment areas. This is an important link in Wilsonville's goal for an interconnected system of transportation choices. As Villebois has grown to over a thousand households, more and more people have voiced a need to have ready access to our bus and commuter rail center to get to work, school, or shopping. Soon they will have a short, direct route to do so whether they are walking, riding or driving."

The project, funded by a $4.25 million federal transportation earmark secured by the City in 2005 and City Urban Renewal resources, is being constructed by Cascade Bridge LLC, an experienced bridge contractor based in Vancouver, Washington. Cascade Bridge, one of eight bidders, won the contract with a construction bid of $4.08 million--approximately $1.1 million under the pre-bid estimate.

"Construction firms expressed very strong interest in the project, resulting in numerous competitive bids, and an excellent price from the winning contractor," explained Eric Mende, the City's Capital Project Manager. "We spent extra time on design review and value engineering, to ensure we get the best bang for the buck," continued Mende.

The key feature of the project is a 410-foot-long bridge that spans the entire Coffee Lake Creek wetlands zone. "We extended the length of the bridge to avoid any potential for settlement into soft ground and also to maintain the quality and character of the wetlands," explained Mende. Due to potential wetlands impacts and over-lapping federal and state agency jurisdictions, extensive permitting and engineering was required to advance the long-planned project.

The Barber Street extension project includes bike lanes, sidewalks, stormwater improvements and approximately one acre of wetlands restoration.
