COMMUNITY REMINDED THAT FIRE STATIONS ARE SAFE HAVENS FOR INFANTS
Posted: May 29th, 2013 2:58 PM

On the heels of an infant being left at a local recycling center this week, TVF&R wants to remind the public that fire stations are 'safe havens' for a distressed parent who is unwilling or unable to care for their infant. The parent may hand over their infant to a firefighter--no questions asked--as long as the infant is less than 30 days old and shows no signs of abuse. Oregon's Safe Haven Law (ORS 418.017) also permits infants to be left at police stations, birthing centers, hospitals and medical centers, by someone other than the infant's parent.

"For over a decade now Oregon has had a Safe Haven Law," states Public Information Officer Karen Eubanks. She added, "No baby should be left in an unsafe environment," TVF&R has had a program in place to accept infants at any of their 21 fire stations since 2001.
