PORTLAND FIRE & RESCUE RESPONDS TO AN EARLY MORNING VACANT HOUSE FIRE

At 5:54 AM, Portland Fire & Rescue was dispatched to a residential fire at 9306 SW 30th Avenue. The fire had been spotted by a passerby on the freeway who said that the house had smoke coming from beneath the eaves and appeared to be vacant. Engine 18 (Multnomah Village) was the first unit to arrive and confirmed that there was a fire at the residence, which appeared to be vacant.
Battalion Chief Scott Beyers praised the fire crews, which identified the fire as being in the basement, causing the main floor to be damaged. This is of particular concern to firefighters because a fire in the basement can weaken the floor and cause the floor to collapse. Engine 18 confirmed that the floor was weakened near the front door and crews made entry through a side door to access the basement and extinguish the fire. Fire crews searched the house and confirmed that it was vacant. The fire was declared under control at 6:26 AM. There were no injuries reported at this fire.
Fire investigators are at the location, working to determine the cause of the fire. There are no damage estimates at this time.
