PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland General Electric is joining more than 120,000 Oregonians -- and 13 million U.S. residents -- in a worldwide earthquake drill Thursday, Oct. 18 as part of the Great Oregon Shakeout by using social media to drive awareness of safety and preparedness for earthquakes and other emergencies with a new "Stay safe. Be prepared." blog and a tailored hashtag, #PDXprep on Twitter.

The new blog at PortlandGeneral.com/BePrepared offers preparedness steps and safety information, and gives Oregonians the opportunity to join the conversation and share how they are getting prepared. The blog includes brief, informative posts, social features and pools information from a variety of resources including the Oregon Red Cross.

PGE is using social media to help the preparedness blog gain further traction via a coordinated social media campaign involving Twitter. With weekly posts through November at PortlandGeneral.com/BePrepared and useful tips under the #PDXPrep tag on Twitter, PGE hopes to build enough of a following to develop a culture of safety and preparedness in Oregon.

"We took the extra steps to get it on Twitter and created the PDXprep hashtag hoping Oregonians will keep the discussion going long after events like the Great Shakeout," said Sheelagh Bandettini, PGE's corporate communications director.

"Americans are becoming increasingly reliant on social media and these platforms allow us to spread preparedness messages to a wide audience," said Paula Negele, communications director, American Red Cross Oregon Region. "PGE's new preparedness blog helps keep Oregonians safe by educating the public on how to protect themselves during a large earthquake or other emergency and how to get prepared."
