Just before 6:30 p.m. this evening, firefighters from TVF&R and Portland Fire and Rescue responded to reports of a fire in a commercial building located at 10255 SW Canyon Road. First-arriving firefighters from nearby Station 65 found heavy white smo ke and flames coming from the "Bazaar Pakistani, Indian and Middle Easter Market Place". Though there were no customers in the building, a small group of employees had already safely evacuated. The employees told an investigator that they discovered the fire in a kitchen which had recently been used for the first time in two years.

The fire burned stubbornly in the attic and void spaces of the 7100-square-foot building, so the fire commander called a second alarm to bring additional resources to the scene. The building did not have a fire sprinkler system. When a fire sprinkler system is present, the likelihood of injuries and costly damage is dramatically reduced. More information about fire sprinkler systems can be found at: http://www.tvfr.com/index.aspx?nid=144

Firefighters controlled the fire within 45 minutes and worked for another hour to ensure that hot spots didn't rekindle. There were no injuries as a result of the fire. An investigator will evaluate burn patterns and material evidence to determine exactly where and how the fire started.

Washington County Sherriff's Office and Beaverton Police Department assisted with traffic control while Canyon Road was shut down.
