RED CROSS OFFERS RESOURCES FOR BREATHING SAFELY NEAR WILDFIRE AREAS

News Release from American Red Cross - Cascades Region
Posted on FlashAlert: August 3rd, 2015 3:04 PM
With wildfires burning in southern Oregon and resulting smoke-filled air, area residents are urged to stay indoors if possible, keep windows in homes and vehicles closed, and drink water to stay hydrated and help reduce scratchy throat and coughing symptoms.

The American Red Cross Cascades Region is NOT distributing face masks. Concerned public members are encouraged to refer to information on the Oregon Public Health Division's website http://tinyurl.com/p6cta6q. The site has a detailed fact sheet about how to reduce exposure to wildfire smoke and outlines the effect of wildfire smoke on people, pets, livestock and drinking water. The fact sheet also notes differences between dust masks and N-95 respirator masks.

This site contains a link to the DEQ Air Quality Index to see real-time air monitoring data from monitors placed around Oregon and information about how to conduct a visual assessment of air quality levels.
