At 12:30 today, Portland Fire & Rescue crews responded to reports of a ship fire at 4350 NW Front Avenue. The fire started in a space that was two levels below the deck of a barge that was under construction. The space, measured at 30' x 40' x 60', was being painted, and the paper that caught the overspray ignited. Crews were on s cene within minutes, and were able to establish water lines utilizing PF&R's Fireboat 6.
Ship fires require a number of PF&R's resources to respond due to the need for many personnel to set up and control the fire scene effectively. The fire was contained to the one compartment and crews confirmed that everyone was accounted. PF&R then extinguished the fire in a short amount of time. However, the ventilation of the space takes some time due to the location of the compartment deep in the ship.
Apparatus responded:
Fireboat Heavy Squad
3 Engines 2 Trucks
Squad Rescue Boat
3 Chiefs Rehab Unit
