Portland Fire & Rescue responded to a fire at 5148 SE 17th Ave this evening. The call came in at 8:15pm, and crews arrived within minutes. Initial reports were that there was smoke issuing out of one of the windows from an apartment on the first floor, and neighbors believed that no one was currently in the unit. It was also said that one person touched the door, felt that it was hot, and decided not to go in. Upon arrival fire fighters worked quickly to evacuate the tenants that were above and on either side of the unit on fire, while others swiftly knocked down the fire.

The fire was controlled and the incident was recalled at 8:35pm. A total of four people were displaced by the fire. No one was injured, and the tenants of the affected fire unit and the apartment above are being assisted by Red Cross.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, and any additional information will be updated when received.

It is important to remember that if there is smoke coming out around a door, leave it closed and find another way out. If you are unsure if there is a fire, before opening a door, feel the door knob with the back of your hand and then the door. If either is hot, leave it closed and find another way out.

Basic Info: 4 Engines, 2 Trucks, 1 Investigator, 1 PIO and 2 Chiefs responded to the call.
