PORTLAND FIRE & RESCUE REPORTING ON SMOKE IN THE PORTLAND AREA
News Release from Portland Fire & Rescue
Posted on FlashAlert: August 22nd, 2015 11:14 AM
Portland Fire & Rescue has noticed a large increase of calls coming into the 9-1-1 center today. Citizens have been calling 9-1-1 to report "smoke in the area". The cause of the smoke is from the wildfires that are occurring throughout the Pacific NW Region. Due to the large number and size of active fires throughout Oregon and Washington, there has been a noticeable increase of smoke in the Portland area. This is due to the winds that have increased today, traveling at 26 mph, from the East to West, and will likely continue throughout today.
The PCNWCC (Pacific Northwest Wildfire Coordinating Group) has reported that wildfire operations have been active for a total of 67 consecutive days, with 43 currently active fires across Oregon and Washington. This level of fire activity has not occurred since 2007.
Portland Fire & Rescue would like to remind citizens to call 9-1-1 when they see a fire or smoke coming from a specific source.
