At 5:05 this evening Firefighters were called to a brush fire near the parking area at 20330 S Hwy 212 in Damascus. As fire crews were enroute, dispatch advised them the fire was spreading to the commercial building. Battalion 4 arrived and found the fire had spread to the building and called for a second alarm. The first crews made their initial attack on the 25'x70' structure from the exterior as the fire spread to the attic area. A partial roof collapse occurred before the fire was extinguished. There are five businesses occupying the structure, two which were damaged by the fire. Crews along with an in-tact fire wall in the attic kept the fire from spreading to the connecting businesses. The two businesses damaged by the fire were Damascus Physical Therapy and Kelaye Concrete. No injuries were reported at the fire and damage estimations are to be determined.

Investigators believe the fire started in the juniper bushes in the adjoining parking lot. A pickup truck was backed into a parking space, made contact with the bushes which sparked the fire. With extreme dry conditions and the amount of wind blowing in the area, the brush fire quickly extended to the building. Remember fire conditions are at extreme levels and always use caution with any heat source around vegetation.
