BEAVERTON, Ore. - The annual Food for Fines program kicks off on Saturday, April 11 at the Beaverton City Library, and runs through Sunday, April 19, benefitting the Oregon Food Bank. Patrons who donate non-perishable food items to the library during National Library Week will be forgiven $2 in fines for every item brought into the main or Murray Scholls branch. Participants can eliminate up to $20 in fines. In addition, those who bring in long-overdue, billed items can have these charges removed.

Preferred donation items include, but are not limited to: boxed meals, canned fruits and vegetables, soup, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, rice, pasta and pasta sauce, beans, condiments, tuna; and toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, hand soap, toilet paper, and toothpaste.

"Each year we are so impressed with Beaverton residents' enthusiasm for this program," said Abigail Elder, library director. "Their dedication to community service is awe-inspiring and we can't wait to see what they achieve this year in the fight against poverty."

During this annual amnesty week, library patrons have donated an average of two tons of food each year to benefit the Oregon Food Bank.

The library will also accept food donations during the grand opening of the new family room at the Beaverton City Library Murray Scholls branch on Saturday, April 11 at noon. National Library Week is Sunday, April 12 to Saturday, April 18, but the library will accept food donations from April 11 to 19.
