BEAVERTON, Ore. - The Beaverton City Library held its annual recognition dinner for volunteers on Wednesday, April 1. This year's theme was "The Wild West," and volunteers enjoyed trivia, raffle prizes, and a western-themed dinner. Many attendees received service anniversary pins for five, ten, and fifteen or more years of volunteer service.

"Volunteers are the heart of our library in Beaverton, and generously give their time for both of our libraries," said Mayor Denny Doyle, who welcomed the group to the event. "This annual dinner is a fun way to say thank you with great appreciation for their support of our libraries."

One volunteer, Silvia Gonzalez was honored with the first-ever Phyllis Davis Volunteer Service Award for outstanding service to the library through example and accomplishment. Gonzalez has volunteered in many areas of the library, most recently as a computer tutor in the Spanish language help lab. She began volunteering at the library as a high school student in 2007, and has donated more than 735 hours of her time. Staff in the children's division nominated her for her years of service, including helping with many children's programs, serving as a homework helper, leading bilingual storytimes, and serving as a children's division volunteer intern, as well as encouraging the library to host more bilingual programs.

This new award was created to memorialize one of the Beaverton City Library's most dedicated volunteers. Phyllis Davis worked or volunteered at the Beaverton City Library for 69 years. She began in Beaverton's one-room library in 1944. In 1953, she was hired by the library to open a new library building in 1958. Throughout her career, Davis was known and admired for her patience, kindness, and love of books. Davis retired from the library in 1986 and almost immediately began volunteering there. She continued volunteering for the next 27 years.

Each division of the library nominated one outstanding volunteer for this award, and the nominations were reviewed by an independent panel of volunteer coordinators from other local libraries. The other four nominees were Edie Taylor, Linda Doherty, Mary Elixman, and Melanie Falls. All five nominees received special scissor-shaped pins, because Davis was known for having a special pair of scissors that she used when volunteering.

The Beaverton City Library's volunteer program had 400 active members in 2014, who donated a total of 19,669 hours of service. Library volunteers assist with tasks such as shelving books, providing homework help, supporting kids' programs, and leading adult computer classes. Volunteers range in age from 9 to 92, including 125 teenagers.
