***Update- A small pet dog was inside the boat and died in this fire. The Portland Fire Investigator determined that this fire was an accident. The owner left a portable propane heater running inside her boat when she left in the morning. The fire started when that heater made contact with clothing. The loss from this fire is estimated at $1000.***

2/24/2015 This afternoon at 12:25 PM Portland Firefighters responded to a 30' sailboat on fire. The boat was tied to a floating dock near the middle of the Ross Island Lagoon. PF&R fireboats arrived and found fire in the sailboats cabin. The boat was unoccupied and secure when fire crews arrived.

The fire was extinguished and an investigator was called to determine the cause. Damage estimates haven't been made yet. This release will be updated with images if any become available.
