On Oct. 28, the Lake Oswego-Tigard Water Partnership will begin to pull a 3,900-foot pipe from east to west through a tunnel that has been drilled under the Willamette River. The pipeline has been assembled between Mel drum Bar Park and Clackamette Park along the eastern bank of the Willamette River.

The pipeline will connect the Partnership's pipeline in Gladstone with its pipeline in West Linn that carries Clackamas River water to the treatment plant.

Pulling the pipeline through the tunnel requires a continuous operation, 24 hours per day, for 1-3 days to ensure that the tunnel remains open. The tunnel drilling operation--conducted over the past three months--is called horizontal directional drilling or HDD. This method was chosen to ensure river wildlife and endangered species would not be impacted by trenching the pipeline through the river.

The Partnership encourages boaters and park users to exercise extreme caution when traveling in the area of the work zone. During night work hours, barges will be in the river as well as support boats and cranes operating in both Meldrum Bar Park and the water.

On the West Linn side of the river, trucks will be delivering and removing materials, such as drill pipe, dirt, rock and drilling mud, and a crane or loader will move drill pipe. Crews will reduce some night time truck traffic by using large storage tanks near the work site.

About the Lake Oswego-Tigard Water Partnership Project
Tigard and Lake Oswego joined together to share the costs of upgrading Lake Oswego's water infrastructure and to share water. Water facilities and pipelines will be upgraded and modernized to serve both communities, and provide a reliable, emergency water supply to West Linn. Other facilities under construction include the river intake pump station on the Clackamas River in Gladstone, the water treatment plant in West Linn, the Waluga reservoir in Lake Oswego and the Bonita water pump station in Tigard.
