Fire crews from across downtown Portland responded late Saturday afternoon to reports of a fire on the second floor of a four story apartment building. The fire was caused by a ventilation fan.

After observing smoke coming from the second floor of the apartment building, the first arriving crew began clearing the building of occupants and prepared for fire attack. Subsequent fire companies secured a water supply, laid down supply lines, and performed ventilation to clear smoke from the building.

Upon reaching the fire floor, firefighters from Truck 3 found moderate smoke and began searching for the seat of the fire. A short time later, firefighters discovered the burning fan, extinguished the fire before it could spread and cause greater damage, and continued to check for extension into hidden spaces.

Firefighters have recalled this fire returned the majority of responding crews to service. Remaining companies are performing scene overhaul and cleanup.

No injuries to firefighters or civilians are reported as a result of this fire. Damage estimates are pending.

The Joyce Hotel is located at 322 SW 11th Avenue.
