Posted on FlashAlert: August 17th, 2014 8:24 PM
A 62-year old Roseburg woman received non-life threatening injuries Saturday morning when she was struck from behind while riding a bicycle along Rogue River Highway east of Grants Pass. The driver who struck the woman was cited by Oregon State Police (OSP) in connection to the investigation.

On August 16, 2014 at approximately 9:45 a.m., ARDENA C. CAMERON, age 62, from Roseburg, was the last of 5 cyclists riding near the fog line on Rogue River Highway near milepost 8 when he bicycle was struck from behind by a Chevrolet pickup driven by AARON K. TOLLER, age 86, from Grants Pass.

CAMERON was ejected from the bicycle and received non-life threatening injuries. She was transported by ambulance to Rogue Regional Medical Center for treatment. She was wearing a helmet. None of the other four cyclists were struck or injured.

TOLLER was cited for Careless Driving. He told the investigating trooper that oncoming traffic prevented him from moving to the left as he was approaching the bicyclist.

No photographs or other information available for this release. Trooper Eve Thornton is the lead investigator.

This was the third incident in the last four days in which OSP troopers investigated a collision involving a vehicle hitting a bicyclist from behind. One bicyclist was killed in the first incident and another was seriously injured in the second incident. Enforcement action is pending in the first two incidents.

OSP urges all drivers to be alert for bicyclists and other vulnerable highway users. When approaching from behind, make sure there is adequate room to safely pass on the left of the bicyclist(s).

ORS 811.065 (Unsafe Passing of a Person Operating a Bicycle) states "The driver of a motor vehicle may only pass a person operating a bicycle by driving to the left of the bicycle at a safe distance and returning to the lane of travel once the motor vehicle is safely clear of the overtaken bicycle. For the purposes of this paragraph, a 'safe distance' means a distance that is sufficient to prevent contact with the person operating the bicycle if the person were to fall into the driver's lane of traffic."
