Interstate 84 eastbound lanes in the La Grande area were closed for over a half hour Friday afternoon while firefighters extinguished a semi-trailer fire.

On May 09, 2014, at approximately 2:48 p.m., OSP Southern Command Center dispatch received a report of a commercial truck and semi-trailer on fire eastbound near milepost 266. An OSP fish and wildlife trooper was first to arrive on scene and confirmed that the semi-trailer was fully engulfed. Additional OSP patrol troopers responded and closed I-84 eastbound at milepost 265. La Grande Rural Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire with the assistance of Imbler Fire Department and Union Fire Department.

The truck's driver was traveling eastbound in a 2006 Volvo pulled a semi-trailer loaded with pallets of over 40,000 pounds of frozen ground salmon when the driver noticed a loss of air pressure to the semi-trailer and stopped along the shoulder to check the problem. The driver then saw smoke coming from the rear axle of the semi-trailer, which quickly turned into fire.

Another commercial truck driver stopped along the shoulder and attempted to help put the fire out. The Volvo truck was separated from the trailer prior to the fire spreading and did not sustain any damage.

One of the drivers was treated on-scene for smoke inhalation by La Grande Fire & Rescue.

The eastbound lanes were closed for approximately 35 minutes until one lane was opened while fire personnel continued to monitor the trailer. Both lanes were opened at 4:58 p.m. The westbound lanes were temporarily closed due to thick smoke blowing across and reducing visibility.

OSP was assisted at the scene by ODOT. Coordination for cleanup and removal was done by ODOT.
