SAFETY BELT BLITZ DATES: May 19 through June 1

Gresham, Ore.- Gresham Police Traffic Division will conduct enhanced patrols from Monday, May 19 through Sunday, June 1, emphasizing enforcement of day and nighttime seatbelt use and laws pertaining to minors in open pickup beds.

According to the US Department of Transportation, consistent vehicle restraint use is the most effective way to protect motor vehicle occupants from injury or death during a crash. In 2012, 61 (31%) of Oregon's 198 vehicle occupant fatalities were unrestrained. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) estimates nearly half of those fatalities could have been avoided with proper restraint use.

For safety belt systems, "proper use" means a lap belt placed low across the hips and a shoulder belt that crosses the center of the chest, over the collarbone. Belts should be free of slack and lie flat with no twists or knots. The shoulder belt should not be placed under the arm or behind the back - this can cause serious internal injuries or ejection during a crash.

The greatest danger to unbelted occupants is ejection from the vehicle. Unbelted or improperly restrained occupants are five times more likely to be ejected than one who is belted. They can also slam into other passengers and injure them during a crash or sharp swerve. The odds of surviving ejection from a vehicle are estimated at one in four. Comparatively, only one in two hundred occupants who remain inside the vehicle during a crash are likely to die. Ejection is the principal reason minors are prohibited from riding in an open bed of a pickup truck.

The selective traffic enforcement "Click It or Ticket" program is funded by grant monies from Oregon ODOT and runs in conjunction with the US Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration annual "Click It or Ticket" campaign. Continuing to educate the public regarding safety belt and child safety seat laws will be the focus of this year's second safety belt blitz.

Gresham police continue to encourage motorists to buckle up, slow down and drive safely. If you fail to click it, the police will ticket.
