The Beaverton City Library invites residents to bring their 2 to 6 year olds to celebrate diversity week during World Language Storytime on May 19-24. The library and its local partners will read stories and sing songs in various languages.

"It's wonderful to live in such a diverse community where so many languages are spoken," said Mayor Denny Doyle. "World Language Storytime celebrates the many cultures within Beaverton and helps bring our community together."

This year, the Library partnered with the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland, PJ Library, the German American School of Portland, and the Iranian Women's Association to present at storytime. Storytime begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Storytime Room on the following days:

* Monday, May 19--Hebrew
* Tuesday, May 20--German
* Wednesday, May 21--French
* Thursday, May 22--Russian
* Friday, May 23--Chinese (Mandarin)
* Saturday, May 24--Farsi

According to the Beaverton School District website, more than 93 languages are spoken by the student population. The library reminds residents that speak another language, or wish to teach their children another language, that the library collection includes books, CDs, DVDs, and audiobooks in more than 20 different languages.

"This is a special event that stresses the importance of recognizing other cultures," said Abigail Elder, library director. "Even if you don't speak or understand a foreign language, we encourage you to bring your children to share in our celebration of diversity."

The Beaverton City Library is open seven days a week and is one of the busiest libraries in the state. Currently, the library serves a population of nearly 150,000 Beaverton and Washington County residents with an annual circulation of 3.5 million items.

The City of Beaverton has two libraries, featuring a collection of more than 410,000 items. The library's mission is to provide information, library materials and library services to meet the needs of the community.

The Beaverton City Library is one of 15 libraries in the Washington County Cooperative Library Services (WCCLS) network. Libraries in WCCLS work together to share resources and information in an effort to provide excellent countywide service.
