At 10:50am Portland Fire & Rescue crews responded to a fire at 8109 SE Lambert St. A neighbor reported seeing flames and smoke from a nearby home. PF&R crews reported seeing a col umn of smoke as they were responding to the location. The first arriving fire engine and ladder truck reported seeing heavy fire and smoke from a one story home w/ a basement. Crews were sent inside to search for trapped occupants and attack the fire that was apparently heaviest in the basement and had extended to the primary floor of the home. Fire crews had some electrical hazards with low lying power lines around the home; close by tree's also presented difficulties in containing the fire from spreading to nearby homes. The only resident of the home had escaped but received some burn injuries and was transported to Emanuel Hospital Burn Center. No specifics are known about the injuries at this time. Once the fire was extinguished fire crews discovered drug making materials in the basement and requested that PF&R's Hazardous Materials Team investigate and confirm no further hazards existed. PF&R fire investigators and Portland Police Drugs & Vice investigators surveyed the scene i n the basement and determined that hash oil was being produced. Fire investigators believe that the hash oil production was directly related to the cause of the fire. Per PPB, Drugs & Vice investigators removed the marijuana remnants from the owner who had an expired medical marijuana license. Charges have not been determined by PF&R investigators. One firefighter experienced a puncture wound to his knee as he searched the building for possible victims, he was transported to the hospital and released.
While responding to the fire, one PF&R ladder truck experienced an equipment failure resulting in the loss of one front wheel. The driver of the ladder truck was able to maintain enough control of the 65,000lb truck to bring it safely to a stop without injury or damage to any occupants or other motorists. Fire Chief Erin Janssens has ordered an immediate inspection of all fire apparatus that utilize the type of front end involved in todays accident.

A fire was reported by a neighbor at SE 82nd and Lambert. First units arrived and reported heavy fire; one resident was discovered with injuries. Due to reports of drug activity in the basement of the home, fire crews were withdrawn from the residence so that the PF&R Haz-Mat team can investigate. The fire is out, but crews are waiting for the complete Haz-Mat investigation before proceeding with fire overhaul.
Media arriving should head Westbound on SE Lambert.
