January 3, 2014--Results from the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" holiday crackdown on impaired drivers.

During the recent holiday season, reducing the deadly dangers from impaired drivers was a high priority and deputies were out in force to arrest those who put themselves and others at risk.

From December 13, 2013, to January 1, 2014, Washington County Sheriff's Office arrested 54 impaired drivers who were driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or a combination of both.

We advised people not to drink and drive, and then backed it up with aggressive enforcement, media releases, and billboards asking people to designate a driver for the holidays. The Sheriff's Office asked drivers to remember that their actions can have serious and potentially fatal consequences, but still a number of drivers continued to put themselves and others at risk during the holiday period.

The holiday season is a particularly deadly time due to the increased number of impaired drivers on the roads. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 86 of the 336 traffic fatalities in Oregon during 2012 involved an impaired driver.

During the month of December, more than any other month, people are killed in crashes that involve impaired drivers. A driver is legally impaired, regardless of their blood alcohol content, if any amount of drugs or alcohol affects their ability to drive.
