Last night, the Red Cross emergency warming shelter at Imago Dei Community accommodated 164 people and 12 pets, the highest number of individuals who have stayed at the shelter on a single night. The facility will be open again tonight at 1302 SE Ankeny St. in Portland, marking the eighth consecutive night the City of Portland has requested Red Cross assistance in providing a warm place for residents to get out of the cold. Since Nov. 20, Red Cross volunteers have operated an emergency shelter for a total of 12 nights, accommodating 1,257 overnight guest stays, including 76 overnight stays by their pets .

"The Red Cross mission is to alleviate human suffering," said Maree Wacker, regional CEO for the Cascades Region of the Red Cross. "For people who sleep outside, these temperatures pose a life-threatening emergency and the Red Cross is there to help."

It takes 35 Red Cross volunteers and staff members to operate a shelter per night. Red Cross warming shelters provide all guests with blankets, sleeping mats and warm beverages and are the only pet-friendly facilities in the city. Red Cross warming shelters are open to all individuals who need a warm, safe place to sleep.
