This morning at 5:12am Portland Firefighters were called to a house at 11214 SE Harold Street. Arriving firefighters found fire on the 2nd floor and throughout the attic of a two story home. The fire had also burned through a portion of the houses roof.

Firefighters from Engine 11 (Lents) began attacking the fire, while firefighters from other nearby engine companies searched the structure to ensure that all occupants were out and safe. Firefighters assigned to a ladder truck began working to ventilate flammable gasses from the structure by cutting a hole in the roof. No occupants were found in the structure and no injuries were associated with this fire. This fire required a great deal of manual labor as it was burning in concealed spaces and required firefighters to "pull ceiling", this means that firefighters had to pull large portions of the ceiling down to expose burning material.

The fire was extinguished and an investigator was called to the scene to determine the fires cause. The Investigator determined that the fire started in the chimney and spread to the attic and second floor. This fire caused an estimated $34,212 in monetary damage.

Portland Fire & Rescue recommends that residents have chimneys and fireplaces cleaned and inspected annually by a licensed chimney inspector.
