Posted on FlashAlert: December 14th, 2013 11:44 AM
A family dog perished in what investigators are calling an intentionally set fire in Oregon City early this morning. Firefighters from seven different stations arrived to the two story residence located at 20134 S. Hwy 213 shortly after midnight to find black velvet smoke belching out of the open front door. All three occupants were able to escape before rescuers arrived the scene to extinguish the fire, originating in the front of the home. One of the residents sustained a minor injury from the incident and was transported to a local area hospital. Preliminary estimates from officials are calling this an $80,000 loss in addition to the family pet. ODOT and police assisted with traffic control on this busy strip of highway south of Oregon City. There were no working smoke alarms in the structure at the time of the fire, and the family is currently staying with relatives.
Oregon State Police along with Clackamas Fire are still working to answer many questions regarding this tragic Christmas time incident. Further details will be available on Monday.
Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths in 2005-2009 resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. Having this simple device in your house is a wish that every firefighter has on their Christmas list. Please put a new smoke alarm in your loved ones stocking this season, and practice a family fire escape plan for the New Year.
