Gresham, Ore. - The Gresham Police Department is participating in a nationwide traffic safety campaign focusing on impaired drivers Dec. 13, 2013 through Jan. 2, 2014.

Police officers will perform enhanced DUII focused patrols looking for impaired drivers. The goal of this campaign is to save lives by removing impaired drivers from the streets. Between Jan. 1 and Dec. 11, 2013, Gresham officers arrested 633 impaired drivers; 597 for alcohol and 36 for drugs. This is approximately a 12 percent increase in DUII cases compared to the same timeframe in 2012.

Drunk driving, impaired driving, or "buzzed" driving all have the potential of claiming lives and often result in the offender being arrested and serving time in jail. Impaired driving is not an accident; it is a deliberate action that places the driver and others at substantial risk of serious injury or death.

The campaign is designed to deter people from driving while impaired by implementing high-visibility enforcement and increasing the number of officers on the streets who are assertively seeking to identify and stop impaired drivers.

Ways to prevent impaired driving:

ï,§ Stop alcohol service long before the event is over.
ï,§ Prepare for guests to stay the night or assist with calling for cab service.
ï,§ Choose a responsible designated driver.
ï,§ Serve plenty of food to lessen the effects of alcohol.
ï,§ Offer a wide range of non-alcoholic beverages.
ï,§ Report impaired drivers by calling 911.

Grant funds from the Oregon Department of Transportation and Oregon Impact support these extra high-visibility DUII patrols.
