April 20, 2013 -- Today at 2:49 p.m., Washington County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a report of a pipe bomb found in a field in rural Washington County. The Portland Bomb Squad responded and detonated the device.
This afternoon, Washington County Sheriff's Deputies responded to SW Clark Hill Road and SW Long Road on a report of a pipe bomb found in a field. Upon arrival, 56-year-old, Rojelio Alvardo-Nunez of Cornelius told deputies he found the device in a field. He reported finding the device to his employer who called 911.
Upon arriving at the scene, the device appeared to be a legitimate pipe bomb, so the Portland Bomb Squad was contacted. The bomb technician determined the best course of action was to detonate the device. The device was moved by the technician to a safer location and detonated. After detonating the device, the technician then was able to confirm the device was a bomb. However, he was not able to determine how much explosive compound or type of compound was contained within the device.
At this time deputies have no leads as to who left the bomb in the field. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office.
