###UPDATE###

After conducting several interviews, Milwaukie Police Detectives have identified the student that set a paper towel dispenser on fire at Linwood Elementary School to be an 11 year old boy. The boy was a student at Linwood Elementary and was participating in an after school program at the time the fire was set. The boy admitted to Milwaukie Police Detectives that he initially set a piece of toilet paper on fire, before lighting the paper towel dispenser using a lighter. The fire was quickly extinguished by a fire sprinkler system and damage was limited to the bathroom. Fire Investigators have determined that $5,000-$10,000 in damage was caused. The results of the criminal investigation are being forwarded to the Clackamas County Juvenile Department for consideration.

Five classrooms with students were in the school participating in after school programs at the time of the fire. Due to early notification by the schools fire alarm, all students and teachers escaped without injury.

Shortly before 4:00pm this afternoon, Clackamas Fire Units were dispatched to Linwood Elementary School at 11909 SE Linwood Avenue to a report of a fire in the building. Crews quickly arrived to find that a small fire had occurred in the bathroom and was quickly extinguished by the fire sprinkler system that was installed at the school. The fire damage was limited to the bathroom and the water flow from the sprinkler head was quickly stopped. There were some students still at the school at the time of the fire who were participating in after school programs. All students made it out of the building safely and no injuries were reported. School will start at regular time on Tuesday however; some of the activities may be moved to different rooms if restoration work is not complete.

Clackamas Fire Investigators were on-scene and have determined that the fire was intentionally set. Milwaukie Police Department is now in-charge of the investigation and will be conducting interviews to identify who started the fire.

The fire damage in this case was limited due to the early detection and extinguishment by the fire sprinkler system that was in place. Clackamas Fire would like to remind people that if they know of a youth in their community that exhibits a fascination or an unsafe interest in fire, that we have trained professionals on staff to help educate them as to the possible dangers of fire!
