Posted: February 27th, 2013 7:45 PM

Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Wednesday afternoon's fatal pedestrian-involved traffic crash that resulted in the death of a 51-year old female whose name will be released Thursday to allow family additional time for next of kin notifications. The driver's name is released in this update.

According to Sergeant Andrew Merila, on February 27, 2013 at approximately 1:15 p.m., a 2013 Dodge Challenger driven by JEFFREY JAY SCHWIETERT, age 29, from Cannon Beach, was northbound on Highway 101 near milepost 34 when a female reportedly walking along the northbound shoulder jumped into the traffic lane and was struck by the car.

The female pedestrian was declared deceased at the scene. She is an out-of-state resident who was staying with an area relative.

SCHWIETERT was not injured.

OSP troopers from the Astoria Area Command office are continuing the investigation. With the assistance of the Clatsop County Medical Examiner, the woman has been identified and is not an area resident.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Clatsop County Sheriff's Office, Cannon Beach Police Department, Cannon Beach Fire & Rescue, Medix Ambulance, and ODOT.

Highway 101 was closed about 90 minutes before one lane was open for traffic. All lanes were open about 30 minutes later.

No photographs available for release at this time.
