At 11:39 am today crews from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue were dispatched to a report of a commercial fire at Five Oaks Middle School in Beaverton. Initial reports to Washington County 911 indicated that the fire was contained to an oven inside the kitchen, and that school staff was attempting to extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher. First arriving crews, who were on scene within four minutes of dispatch, reported a light haze of smoke throughout the cafeteria and kitchen area. Upon entering the kitchen firefighters discovered that the fire had been extinguished, and was indeed contained to the oven itself. Fire crews remained on scene for about forty minutes to assist with removing smoke from the building.
A TVF&R fire investigator determined that the cause of the fire was a malfunctioning appliance, and was electrical in nature. Firefighters reported that the school had been evacuated prior to their arrival, and school officials stated that the evacuation went smooth and as planned. The Beaverton School District stated that there were approximately 1200 students in school at the time of the fire. Students were displaced from class for approximately 30 minutes while firefighters and school staff worked to clear smoke from the cafeteria. There was no damage estimate immediately available.
