The driver of a semi truck carrying a full load of used rail road ties sustained only minor injuries after having to be cut from the wreckage of his cab this morning. About 7:50 AM, a 1985 Peterbilt being driven by Brandon Moore, 21, of Estacada, was exiting from northbound I-205 at SE 82nd Dr in Gladstone (Exit 11). The Peterbilt was hauling a semi-trailer full of used railroad ties and further investigation by Oregon State Police truck inspectors showed the trailer was improperly loaded. As the Peterbilt made a right turn onto 82nd Dr, the improper loading caused the truck and trailer to overturn. The spilled railroad ties struck a 1999 Volvo semi truck hauling an empty chip trailer which was west bound on SE 82nd Dr. The Volvo was being driven by Lee Orias, 57, of Salem.
The spilled railroad ties also struck a 2000 Volkswagen which was following behind the Volvo chip truck. The Volkswagen was being driven by Melany North, 36, of Damascus.
Moore was trapped in his cab and had to be extricated by Gladstone Fire. He was then transported to Kaiser Sunnyside hospital where he was treated and released. Neither Orias nor North were injured in the collision. SE 82nd Dr was closed approximately five hours while clean up crews worked to get the ties picked up and the Peterbilt towed from the scene. The driver of the Peterbilt was cited by OSP for failure to retain a log book.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Gladstone Police, Gladstone Fire, Gladstone Public Works, and ODOT.
