An update to the fire on Christmas Eve, that caused heavy damage to a house on SW Dilley Road. Fire investigators have concluded their examination into the cause of the fire. At this time, an exact cause is undetermined due to extensive damage in the area of origin. But investigators have determined the fire started near a small 2-3 feet tall Christmas tree that was set up in the kitchen. A candle that was reported to be blown out was placed near the tree or Christmas lights on the tree are two probable causes. Also the tree had not been watered for at least 7 days and was dry which lead to the increased spread of flames. The fire is estimated to have caused $90,000 in damages to the house and contents.

Firefighters from Forest Grove Fire & Rescue (FGF&R) were alerted to a house fire at 8:30AM on Monday December 24, 2012 located in the 2300 block of SW Dilley Road. Firefighters arrived shortly after being dispatched to find a single story house with large amounts of smoke coming from all sides of the house. Fire crews made entry into the house and were able to quickly find and extinguish the flames in the rear portion of the house.

Two adults as well as two children were home at the time of the fire and thankfully all made it out safely. One of the adults and the two children were evaluated on scene for smoke inhalation and were later transported by Metro West Ambulance to Tuality Hospital in Hillsboro for further treatment.

Due to the location being in a rural area, there was a slightly extended response time for the emergency crews to arrive on scene. Also with no fire hydrant near the house, water tenders were used to shuttle water into the scene to fight the flames.

Firefighters remained on scene for a couple hours extinguishing hot spots. There is heavy smoke and heat damage throughout the house, with very heavy fire damage in the kitchen. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but appears to have started in the kitchen. The fire is initially estimated to have caused around $50,000. The family was given assistance by the Cornelius Firefighters Association for replacing Christmas gifts possibly damaged by the fire.

Forest Grove Fire & Rescue wants to remind everyone that if a fire occurs in your house, never go back into the burning house for anything. You should never put your life at risk for things that can be replaced.

FGF&R was assisted on scene by Cornelius Fire Dept, Hillsboro Fire & Rescue and Gaston Fire District.

Response:
3 Engines
4 Water Tenders
2 Chiefs

23 Firefighters responded.
