For the sixth year in a row, the International Longshoremen's Union Local No. 4 teamed up with City of Vancouver Firefighters to donate brand new bikes and helmets for 129 needy children for the holidays. The Children's Justice Centers' (CJC) multidisciplinary team partners with the Longshoreman and Firefighters to help identify children in need of a bike who are in homes where the purchase of a bike is not monetarily possible. This is truly a labor of love, because the Longshoremen not only purchase the bikes, but assemble and test them for safety. Vancouver Firefighters make sure all of the bikes donated are accompanied by a bike helmet.
"These gifts are especially important because many of the children involved with CJC are living in foster care or have been placed with relatives who do not have the means to provide this kind of gift. Their generosity will make a big difference for all of those children this Christmas morning. This kind of thoughtfulness builds and strengthens a community for children." Mary Blanchette, Executive Director, Children's Justice Center.
A grandmother broke into tears at the site of the new bikes for her grandchildren who she now has custody of due to safety concerns. She said, "I would not be able to give them all such a wonderful gift."
