ARSON DAMAGES MAIL IN GASTON
Posted: December 24th, 2012 7:20 AM
An early morning arson inside a large mailbox in front of the Gaston Post Office damaged outgoing mail deposited over the weekend Monday.
Crews from the Gaston Rural Fire District were called to the scene at about 6 a.m. and found smoke coming from the mailbox. A gasoline canister was found inside the mailbox with a lit wick attached.
Crews were able to extinguish the fire in time to save much of the mail, but many pieces were heavily damaged by gasoline and water.
Gaston Fire Chief Roger Mesenbrink made a quick determination of arson, and turned over investigation to the Washington County Sheriffs Office and United States Postal Service for investigation and prosecution.
Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity between 5 and 6 a.m. is urged to contact the Washington County Sheriffs Office at (503) 629-0111. Anyone who deposited mail in the outside drop box should contact the Post Office.
