The driver of a commercial motor vehicle received minor injuries Tuesday evening when he lost control of his tractor and semi-trailer while exiting from eastbound Interstate 84 at Benson State Park. The commercial vehicles rolled onto its driver's side and a fire started in the engine compartment which quickly spread to the cab and trailer and they became fully engulfed. The driver was able to escape with minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The trailer was hauling hamburgers. The exit ramp was closed during the investigation and scene clearance.
According to OSP Trooper Cameron Bailey from the Portland Area Command, on November 6, 2012 at approximately 5:40 pm, a 1999 Volvo Conventional truck pulling a semi-trailer loaded with hamburger driven by MICHAEL W. CHASE age 68, from Woodburn, Oregon, was eastbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 31 when he exited the interstate at MP 31 - Benson State Park. The driver lost control of his vehicles and they subsequently rolled onto the driver's side. Initial investigation indicated that speed was a contributing factor during wet and rainy conditions.
CHASE was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for minor injuries. The driver was using safety restraints.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Multnomah Co S.O., Multnomah Co FD and ODOT.
