SALEM POLICE HAZARDOUS DEVICE TECHNICIANS RENDER SAFE SUSPICIOUS BACKPACK OUTSIDE ENTRANCE TO OREGON STATE PENITENTIARY

Hazardous Device Technicians from Salem Police Department rendered safe a suspicious backpack outside the main entrance to the Oregon State Penitentiary building in Salem Wednesday afternoon. The adult male who left the backpack was detained before leaving the area and voluntarily agreed to be taken to Salem Hospital for a mental health examination.
On October 17, 2012 at approximately 12:43 p.m. a report was received regarding the suspicious backpack. A man who left the backpack was detained by Department of Corrections' officers and turned over Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers arriving at the scene. Access to the entrance to the State Penitentiary was restricted but there were no evacuations while Salem Police Department Hazardous Device Technicians examined the backpack and rendered it safe.
The man was taken by an OSP trooper to Salem Hospital and his name will not be released unless he is arrested or charged in the future related to this incident.
