HILLSBORO FIRE TO HONOR LAKE OSWEGO WOMAN LIFE-SAVER
Posted: October 1st, 2012 4:54 PM

Hillsboro Fire Department will present a Life-Saver award to Theresa Whalen of Lake Oswego for her actions in saving a man's life here in Hillsboro. The award will be presented at the City of Hillsboro Council meeting at 7:00 p.m., October 2nd at the Hillsboro Civic Center Auditorium.

On the evening of September 18th, Ms. Whalen was visiting her mother in the Orenco neighborhood in Hillsboro when she spotted a man slumping to the ground. She checked the man's vital signs, found he had no pulse and wasn't breathing. She called 9-1-1 and began cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. When Hillsboro firefighter/medics arrived a few minutes later, they relieved Whalen, deployed their external defibrillator and began aggressive treatment of the patient. Metro West Ambulance transported the patient to an area hospital. By the time he arrived at the hospital, he had a pulse and was breathing on his own. The adult male patient remained in the hospital until Tuesday, September 25th, when he was released with no apparent neurological deficits. The patient's identity is unavailable due to patient privacy laws.

Hillsboro firefighter/medics credit the bystander's quick actions and application of C-P-R with saving the man's life.
"All the elements of success were lined up on this call," said Fire Chief Greg Nelson. "An early call to 9-1-1 to start our fire/medics, quick application of C-P-R and deployment of a defibrillator combined with definitive cardiac care at a hospital." Chief Nelson added that bystander C-P-R is the critical variable that only citizens can make that kind of difference.

Hillsboro Fire and Rescue will offer a C-P-R class for adults at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 27th at the Jones Farm Fire Station 5 located at 21880 NW Cherry Lane. The 5-hour class covers C-P-R, basic first aid and automatic external defibrillators. The cost is $40 per person. Preregistration is required by calling Shauna Schmidlin at 503-681-3901.
