On Tuesday September 26, 2012 at approximately 1:27 am, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office received a report of a man cutting wires attached to streetlights along the bike path bordering I-205 near Highway 212. Sheriff's Deputies arrived in the area and saw that some streetlights were out.

A man was seen running into the wooded area bordering next to the bike path. Sheriff's Deputies along with Officers from the Gladstone Police Department quickly surrounded the dense wooded area and a K-9 was brought in from the Portland Police Bureau.

A subsequent search of the wooded area led Deputies to Nicholas Richmond, 24 years old from Oregon City. He was found buried deep in Blackberry bushes. Deputies had to chop through the Blackberry bushes in order to reach Mr. Richmond. Mr. Richmond continued to hide in the bushes until bitten by the K-9.

Mr. Richmond was taken into custody. Medical Personnel checked Mr. Richmond's bite area but he had only minor scratching so he was transported to the Clackamas County Jail. Mr. Richmond was booked in for Criminal Mischief I, a felony along with warrants for Eluding a Police Officer, Theft III and Driving while Suspended.

According to Oregon Department of Transportation Officials, the value of the wire Mr. Richmond is accused of trying to steal was only $30 to $40. The cost to repair the damage will be over $600.

Any damage to a public transportation system as these lights are, immediately makes the crime a felony, punishable by up to 5 years in prison and $125,000 in fines.

The details of this case closely mirror an Oregon State Police case (http://www.oregon.gov/osp/NEWSRL/Pages/news/09_21_2012_odot_wire_theft_i205.aspx). Investigators from the Oregon State Police and the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office will be continuing to investigate to determine if Mr. Richmond is connected to this case as well.
