MOTORCYCLIST DIES AFTER VEHICLE CROSSES CENTERLINE

On September 27, 2012 at 7:16 pm., Washington County Sheriff's Deputies responded to SW
Roy Rogers Road and SW Scholls-Sherwood Road concerning a crash where a vehicle and a
motorcyclist collided.
When Sheriff's Deputies arrived they found that a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban driven by 15-yearold
Taylor Rutherford from Hubbard Oregon was traveling south on SW Roy Rogers Road south
of the SW Scholls-Sherwood intersection. The Suburban veered onto the right shoulder, lost
control and then crossed the centerline. When the Suburban crossed into oncoming traffic it
collided with a 1999 Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling the opposite direction. The
motorcycle was ridden by 66-year-old Dale Smith from King City. Dale Smith was pronounced
deceased at the scene.
Taylor Rutherford was driving with a valid Oregon instruction permit at the time of the crash.
There was a licensed driver and another passenger in her vehicle, they were not injured.
Members from the Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART) responded
to assist with the investigation. Southwest Roy Rogers Road was closed to traffic for about
four hours.
The completed investigation will be forwarded to the Washington County District Attorney's
Office for review.
