On August 21, 2012, at 12:07 p.m., members of the US Marshals Fugitive Task Force tracked a wanted subject to an apartment complex at 18150 SW Rosa Road in Aloha. They were searching for 25-year-old Michael Tate from the Aloha area. Michael Tate was wanted on a Parole Violation warrant for Felony Assault in the Second Degree out of Multnomah County. He was also wanted for new crimes to include: Felony Assault in the Second Degree, Strangulation, and Menacing. These new crimes occurred in Beaverton, against a female victim, on August 19, 2012.

The US Marshals Fugitive Task Force is a specialized team, comprised of members of local law enforcement agencies and Marshals, which focuses on apprehending violent wanted criminals. They are overseen by the US Marshals Office.

Marshals were watching the apartment for hours then made contact with a person at the door. It was determined that Mr. Tate was inside the apartment. When the Marshals attempted to arrest Mr. Tate, he was resistive and his actions escalated forcing a Marshal to fire his weapon. Mr. Tate dove out of a third story window. He received substantial injuries from landing on the dirt. He was transported by ground to a local Portland hospital. The injuries found appear to be from jumping out of the window.

A Portland Police Bureau Officer assigned to the US Marshals Task Force shot at Mr. Tate at least once. The Portland Police Bureau will follow their procedures with their officer. No law enforcement officers were injured in this incident.

The Washington County Major Crimes Team is leading the investigation. The Major Crimes Team is overseen by the District Attorney's Office. Oregon State Police Forensics assisted with evidence collection. Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction and Forensics Teams assisted with processing the scene.
