At approximately 9:20 Canby Fire was dispatched to a gas leak in the area of N. Ivy and NW 1st Ave. This area is involved in major re-construction which includes installation of new streets and sidewalks.

Fire crews arrived and found that a construction backhoe had struck a 1" Natural Gas Line that was free-venting into the atmosphere and winds were blowing from the NE. Working together with NW Natural, Canby Fire identified the area between 1st and 2nd, and between Ivy and Holly as the hot zone, issuing a full evacuation. Buildings evacuated included: Canby City Hall, Canby Transit, Canby Utility, Canby Building and Planning, and Oliver Insurance. The recently closed police station was already vacant, but within the same block.

At approximately 10:05 NW Natural secured the leak, and a systematic building check for gas levels was conducted. Once determined safe, all buildings were allowed to re-occupy. At no time during the incident were measurable levels of natural gas detected in any of the buildings, the short term evacuation was precautionary.

After the leak was stabilized and the area building re-occupied, NW Natural went building to building to advise businesses of the situation, when they could expect a return of gas services, and also answer questions.
