Double Fatal Traffic Crash - Highway 138W southeast of Elkton

DOUBLE FATAL TRAFFIC CRASH - HIGHWAY 138W SOUTHEAST OF ELKTON

Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into Sunday morning's fatal traffic crash the resulted in the death of two people on Highway 138W about 8 miles east of Elkton. The names of the deceased man and woman will be released Monday pending completion of next of kin notification.

According to Sergeant Dave Randall, on August 19, 2012 at about 10:35 a.m. a vehicle driven by an adult male was westbound on Highway 138W near milepost 8 entering a right hand curve after passing three cars when it failed to negotiate the curve and began traveling in the eastbound lane of travel. An eastbound 2005 Chevrolet pickup driven by PAUL WELLINGTON, age 59, from Redding, California, was unable to avoid a head-on crash with the westbound vehicle.

PAUL WELLINGTON and his passenger TERI WELLINGTON, age 59, were transported by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg with non-life threatening injuries. They both were using safety restraints.

The deceased male operator was using safety restraints. The deceased female passenger in his vehicle was not.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Sutherlin Police Department, Kellogg Rural Fire District, Elkton Rural Fire Department, and ODOT. This section of highway was closed for over 2 hours.
