A Salem-area man was arrested Wednesday afternoon by Oregon State Police (OSP), with the assistance of Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, after he allegedly stole 3 large steel sewer/drainage grates at the Interstate 5 northbound Baldock Rest Area south of Wilsonville.

On July 11, 2012 at approximately 4:45 p.m. an OSP trooper driving through the northbound Interstate 5 Baldock Rest Area saw a 2005 Chevrolet pickup start to leave at a high rate of speed after the driver saw the trooper. A UPS driver on a break in the back lot of the rest area told the trooper that the pickup's driver was "messing around" with steel grates before leaving the back rest area lot. As the trooper tried to overtake the pickup, it drove the wrong way through the front part of the rest area and tried unsuccessfully to hide between two parked commercial trucks.

The trooper contacted the pickup's driver identified as DON KIDRICK, age 50, from Salem. KIDRICK tossed a methamphetamine pipe under the pickup, but instead of staying out of sight it rolled and stopped in front of the pickup where the trooper spotted it.

After KIDRICK was taken into custody the trooper confirmed three large metal grates in the pickup were stolen from the back of the rest area. A Baldock Rest Area supervisor estimated each grate's value at $500.

A search of the pickup's interior where one of the stolen grates was found also led to the discovery of a small amount of methamphetamine.

KIDRICK was lodged in the Clackamas County Jail for Theft in the First Degree, Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance - Methamphetamine, Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree, and Offensive Littering.
