Washington County Sheriff's Deputies have been wearing a familiar gray and black uniform since 2000; however, rising costs are driving a change that takes effect next week. Deputies will transition to a tan shirt, but will maintain black colored trousers. Additionally, the old wool blend uniform became more expensive and difficult to obtain.
The Sheriff's Office tested several different styles and fabric types before deciding on the new uniform. Deputies reported the breathable lightweight fabric is cooler and more functional than the current uniform. The Sheriff's Office will save nearly $50,000 a year in replacement uniform costs with this change. In addition, the new style adds better fit, comfort, and durability.
Sheriff Pat Garrett commented, "Any time we can do right by our deputies and lower the cost to the public is great news." Sheriff's Deputies will begin wearing the new uniforms at the Washington County Fair beginning July 26, 2012. Uniforms will be phased in over the next year as replacements are necessary.
The public will see the new uniform color tied to patrol vehicles in coming months as well. With Ford's discontinued production of the Crown Victoria, the Sheriff's Office has selected the Chevrolet Caprice and Tahoe as replacement vehicles. This selection was made after extensive testing of available police rated vehicles over a two year period. The Chevrolet models will be phased in over time as the Ford vehicles require replacing. As another cost saving effort by the Sheriff's Office, the Caprices will be fitted with many reusable items from the aging Crown Victorias.
