PRELIMINARY STATISTICS FOR 2012 MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY WEEKEND PERIOD

Preliminary statistics for the 2012 Memorial Day holiday weekend period indicates fewer statewide traffic fatalities in comparison to last year's holiday weekend. This year's Memorial Day holiday reporting period began at 6:00 p.m., May 25, and concluded May 28 at 11:59 p.m.
According to ODOT's Fatality Analysis Reporting System, three people died in 3 separate fatal traffic crashes in Oregon during this year's reporting period. In comparison to the previous three Memorial Day holiday periods, 4 people died during the 2011 Memorial Day holiday weekend; six people died during the 2010 Memorial Day holiday period; and, five people died during the 2009 holiday period.
Before this year's holiday weekend, 259 people have died since 1970 in Oregon traffic crashes during the Memorial Day holiday period; an average of more than 6 fatalities per reporting period. The highest number of Oregon traffic fatalities during this holiday period happened in 1979 when 13 people died.
A brief review of Oregon's confirmed fatal crashes during this year's holiday period:
* On Saturday, May 26, at approximately 12:01 a.m. a 51-year old La Pine-area woman pedestrian was struck by a pickup on Highway 97 near La Pine. The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office is the lead investigating agency.
* On Saturday, May 26, at approximately 11:00 p.m. a 54-year old man died after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while riding a bicycle along East 30th Avenue near Forest Boulevard in Lane County. The Lane County Sheriff's Office is the lead investigating agency.
* On Monday, May 28, at approximately 12:30 p.m. a 53-year old Pendleton-area woman died after the motorcycle she was operating was struck head-on by a pickup on Highway 7 near milepost 40 in Baker County. A second female motorcyclist was critically injured. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Baker City Area Command office are the lead investigating agency.
Preliminary OSP enforcement statistics for this year's Memorial Day holiday period noted troopers arrested 61 DUII drivers, down from 88 DUII arrests last year. OSP offices reporting three or more DUII arrests were:
* Portland Area Command office - 10 DUII arrests
* Springfield Area Command office - 10 DUII arrests
* Bend Area Command office - 6 DUII arrests
* Albany Area Command office - 5 DUII arrests
* Coos Bay Area Command office - 5 DUII arrests
* Salem Area Command office - 4 DUII arrests
* Roseburg Area Command office - 4 DUII arrests
* St. Helens Work Site office - 3 DUII arrests
* Astoria Area Command office - 3 DUII arrests
Increased patrols and participation in traffic safety enforcement campaigns by OSP, county sheriff offices and city police departments will continue through June 3rd as part of the ongoing national "Click It or Ticket" campaign.
