Local law enforcement agencies, including the Fairview and Gresham Police Departments and the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, will participate in a "Click It or Ticket" safety blitz from Monday, May 21st through Sunday, June 3rd.

These blitzes are sponsored by the Three Flags Campaign, which provides overtime funding to allow police officers throughout the state and in Washington and British Columbia, Canada, to join together for two-week periods of intensive, high-visibility safety belt enforcement.

Since passage of the adult belt law in 1990, statewide crash fatality and injury rates have dropped 61% and 37% respectively, while belt use increased from 50% to 97%. Oregon's 97.0% belt use in 2011 ranks third among all US states.

"Proper use" of safety belts is required by Oregon law. Do not place your shoulder belt under your arm or behind your back, this can cause serious internal injuries or ejection in a crash.

Consistent safety belt use is the single most effective way to protect vehicle occupants from injury and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes, according to the US Department of Transportation.
