Posted: March 7th, 2012 2:52 AM

Four people were injured early Tuesday when a passenger car attempting to elude an Oregon State Police (OSP) trooper ran a red stop light at the intersection of West 11th Street and S. Bertelsen Road in West Eugene and collided with a pickup. A Eugene police vehicle patrolling in the area was struck by one of the involved vehicles. At the request of OSP, Eugene Police Department is the lead investigating agency.

Preliminary information indicates on March 7, 2011 at approximately 12:32 a.m. an OSP trooper stopped a 2000 Nissan Maxima with one occupant after spotting it driving in excess of 100 mph southbound on Belt Line Road near milepost 3. As the trooper got out of his patrol car and approached the Nissan, it drove off at a high rate of speed and was seen running through a red light as it turned eastbound on West 11th Street.

The Nissan continued eastbound at a high rate of speed as the trooper attempted to keep it in sight with lights and siren activated. A short distance after turning east on West 11th Street, the Nissan disobeyed a stop signal at the intersection of West 11th Street and S. Bertelsen Road where it collided broadside into a pickup with two occupants at approximately 12:32 a.m.

Two Eugene police vehicles uninvolved with the initial traffic stop and eluding vehicle were in the area of the intersection. One of the police vehicles was also struck after the initial impact.

An adult male and adult female in the pickup were both ejected and seriously injured. The Nissan's male driver was also injured.

A Eugene police officer received minor injuries.

All four were transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend. All names are withheld at this time.

The intersection at West 11th Street and S. Bertelsen Road will be closed for several hours during the on scene investigation.

No other information will be released at this time pending approval by the Lane County District Attorney's Office and Eugene Police Department. An updated release will be sent advising when additional information is to be released.
