An 85-year old Forest Grove man was upgraded to fair condition today after losing control of his car Wednesday afternoon on Highway 6 about a half mile east of Brown's Camp, traveled off an approximate 120 foot embankment and crashed. Oregon State Police, Washington County Sheriff's Office and firefighters from three agencies worked together to rescue the man prior to his transport to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center.

Officers and firefighters said the driver and his vehicle probably would have been undiscovered and still out of sight if a motorist hadn't reported a possible traffic crash at the location. The motorist drove through the area shortly after the crash happened and only saw a cloud of dust and skid marks. He didn't see a vehicle but drove about eleven miles west to Lee's Camp Store where he had cell phone service and called 9-1-1.

The caller's name will be released if we get his approval and contact information.

On August 17, 2011 at approximately 4:30 p.m. a 2002 Toyota Camry driven by PETER ROWAN, age 85, from Forest Grove, was eastbound on Highway 6 near milepost 32 when it traveled onto the gravel shoulder negotiating a left curve. ROWAN over-corrected and the Toyota traveled across the highway, though a gravel pullout and over an embankment down a very steep, wooded slope approximately 120 feet before stopping.

OSP troopers, a Washington County deputy and Forest Grove Fire Department personnel responded to the scene. Senior Trooper Mark McDougal and Deputy Garrick Garland arrived first, moved down the steep slope to the car and provided initial emergency medical care to ROWAN. Forest Grove Fire Department personnel arrived about 15 minutes later and subsequently cut the car's roof off. With the help of the officers and fire personnel from Forest Grove, Banks and Tillamook used specialized rope rescue tactics to bring ROWAN back up to the highway shoulder about an hour later.

ROWAN was transported by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center.

NOTE: Senior Trooper McDougal and Deputy Garland are available for media contact this afternoon, if interested.

Questions for Forest Grove Fire Department should be directed to Dave Nemeyer at (503) 828-7330.
