On Thursday night, August 18, 2001, deputies from the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office arrested two 12-year-old boys in connection with the fire that destroyed a play structure at Bilquist Elementary in Milwaukie earlier this week.
Several concerned citizens had phoned in tips naming the two boys as suspects. Acting on those tips, the deputies made contact with the boys at their homes in Milwaukie.
Both boys admitted to throwing Molotov Cocktails that lit the play structure on fire. They told deputies they did not think the structure would burn down.
They were taken into custody and booked at the Clackamas County Juvenile Reception Center. The boys were each charged with Arson II and Criminal Mischief I.
Both boys had been students at Bilquist Elementary School.
Damages to the playground have been estimated at $40,000 dollars.
"This case would have been a lot harder to solve if the public had not stepped up and phoned in their tips," said Deputy Bryon O'Neil the investigating deputy for this case. "It really shows how the community can make a difference by keeping their eyes open and reporting things that seem out of place."
