SILVERTON FIRE DISTRICT FIGHTS STUBBORN
Posted: July 12th, 2011 2:46 AM

The Silverton Fire District responded at approximately 9:00 pm last night to a residential structure fire in the 100 block of Wesley St. in Silverton. When the first unit arrived on scene, fire on the exterior of the home could be observed.

The house was occupied by five residents when the blaze started on the exterior of the house. Shortly after the Silverton Fire District incident commander arrived on scene, he requested a second alarm on the fire. The Silverton Fire District responded with 8 pieces of fire apparatus while mutual aid apparatus from Mt. Angel Fire District and Marion County Fire District assisted in controlling the blaze. Over 30 firefighters were needed to control fire.

The monetary loss of the structure and the contents cannot be estimated at this time. However, there was heavy fire damage to the second and third floors and smoke and water damage was noted on the first floor. One firefighter indicated that the roof had "vented" itself meaning that it had been breached by the fire.

There were no injuries to Firefighters or members of the public. The American Red Cross was on scene assisting the residents of the home.

The cause of the blaze is being investigated with a focus being on the outside barbecue grill located near the home.

More information will provided as it is received.
