Portland Parks & Recreation Partners with "Operation Pitch Invasion":
PP&R, Timbers Army Community Outreach
(Portland, OR)
Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) welcomes the vaunted Timbers Army in helping to renovate soccer fields at Ed Benedict Park on July 16th.
The famous, green-clad fanatics of Portland's MLS soccer team are known for their endless game chants, cheering, and non-stop noise when supporting the Timbers on the field. On July 16th, they'll take their talents to a different pitch for the family-friendly Operation Pitch Invasion!
Work activities for volunteer participants include cleaning irrigation heads, replacing nozzles, adjusting sprinkler heads to grade, minor turf repair, and filling in low areas. Portland Parks & Recreation staff will be on hand to lead the project, train participants, oversee the work, and do quality control. PP&R will also provide all needed tools and materials. All volunteers are welcome; folks should bring gloves, wear attire for digging, be ready to get a little dirty. Children ages 8 and up are welcome, but must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and supervised.
The Timbers Army will provide t-shirts for all of the volunteers. There is a post party planned, location TBD; all volunteers and city employees are welcome to attend.
WHAT: Operation Pitch Invasion Community Outreach:

WHEN: Beginning at 9am on Saturday, July 16th, 2011; approximately 4-5 hours of work.
About the Timbers Army:
Hearts on their sleeves and thousands of voices strong, the Timbers Army fills Jeld-Wen Field with songs, scarves, flags and confetti. Their green-and-white energy flows onto the pitch anywhere the Portland Timbers play.
Part carnival, part mosh pit, part revival meeting, part Christmas morning, filled with people from every part of the community and every walk of life, the Timbers Army turns each game into a celebration of its love of Portland, of soccer, and of the Timbers.
If you like your sports passionate instead of passive - if you're proud of the Rose City - if you appreciate the Beautiful Game - YOU are Timbers Army. No membership, no initiation, no rules, no fuss. Just wander into the North End of PGE Park and join the fun!
